Mesmetopia

Genre: Sci-fi/Thriller – elements of ’12 Monkeys’ and ‘The Spy Who Came in from the Cold’

After a deadly virus decimates the Earth, mankind’s only hope rests on the shoulders of a brilliant but maverick doctor who is determined to discover a vaccine amidst the turmoil of a ruthless political struggle.

In the not too distant future, an intelligent virus decimates the earth. Devouring the cells of every living organism, nothing can withstand its inexorable onslaught. Mankind has been forced to retreat to a primitive subterranean compound.

But even here the legacy of the virus is sorely felt as two separate colonies evolve but continue to suffer. Pures – the ruling class but infertile – a dying breed; and Contaminates – able to reproduce but ridden with disease – doomed to live no better than the rats they live off.

Keeping an omniscient eye over every aspect of life is the Praesidium, a ruthless dictatorship of Pures, prepared to maintain supreme authority and control at any cost.

Harper – a Pure and a brilliant but maverick doctor – is tasked with finding a cure for the Pures’ sterility, but this is at the cost of relinquishing his search for a vaccine that will also help the Contaminates. Refusing to play along with the political machinations that surround him, he nevertheless gets embroiled in a political storm of deceit and immorality where power is the goal and lives are traded like currency.

Forced to first question and then betray everything he believes in, he realises there is a fine line between being a hero or being a traitor.

Political intrigue, ruthless ambition and destructive compassion – Mesmetopia is a bleak but compelling reflection of both the tragic and divine facets of humanity.
